Create Search Plugin for your Blog

Many of us must be using Mozilla Firefox, So I’ve created a search engine extension which works on Mozilla Firefox and searches with in Chill Geeks. You could also create a similar extension for your blog. Creating Search engine plug-in for Firefox web browser is very easy. Some of the prerequisites to make your search addon,is that, you should have a little idea about working with XML. You can start making your own blog Search Engine using the template below-
<OpenSearchDescription xmlns=””
<Image width=”16″ height=”16″ type=”image/x-icon”>data:image/x-icon;base64,imageData</Image>
<Url type=”text/html” method=”method” template=”searchURL”>
  <Param name=”paramName1″ value=”paramValue1″/>
  <Param name=”paramNameN” value=”paramValueN”/>
<Url type=”application/x-suggestions+json” template=”suggestionURL”/>

I’ve got this template from Mozilla Developer Center. Various terms used in above template are described at Mozilla Developer’s Center
I’ll explain how I created search engine plug-in for Chill Geeks.WithoutImage

  • Open C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxsearchplugins
  • There you’ll see all search engine plug-in’s xml files, open up any file using Notepad++ or any text Editor and you will get an idea about the working of various search engine addons
  • Now create a new file over there, name it as yoursite.xml
  • Use the template above and make the required changes.

See the example below, which I’ve made for Chill Geeks
<SearchPlugin xmlns=””>
<ShortName>Chill Geeks</ShortName>
<Description>Chill Geeks Google Search</Description>
<Image height=”16″ width=”16″ type=”image/x-icon”></Image>
<Url type=”application/x-suggestions+json” method=”GET” template=”;client=firefox&amp;hl={moz:locale}&amp;q={searchTerms}”/>
<Url type=”text/html” method=”GET” template=””>
  <Param name=”q” value=”{searchTerms}”/>

  • Searchplugin is used to define starting of plugin xml
  • Shortname is used to display name in search bar
  • InputEncoding, keep it UTF-8
  • Image, specifies the path of favicon of your site.
  • Url type JSON, fetches Suggestion quiries from Google.
  • Url type html, specifies site to search within.
  • Param (Parameters), vairable seach term.

If you want to get above xml file, please click here.Now you can easily create your blog’s plugin just by modifying this file and changing to or
You could also specify Image that will appear in search bar by replacing with your own favicon image URL.
You can also submit your extension to Mozilla Add-ons, which will increase the popularity of your website. Please let me know by comments, if you get any difficulty in making your search engine extension.

Backup Windows Live Writer

As we all know it is very easy and fast to blog with help of Microsoft’s free tool Windows Live Writer. But when it comes to formatting or reformatting operating system, there is a chance of loss of WLW data. But Now you can move securely to upgrade or format Windows, without worrying about your Windows Live Writer’s information stored. Whenever you format your PC/ Laptop, it is required to re-install Windows Live Writer, and all the previous linking database is lost. Scott has come up with a solution to this problem. He made a small program know as Windows Live Writer backup hosted at codeplex. You can download this here. MainWindow

Basic Requirements to run this release are-

  • You must have .NET 3.5 SP1 installed.

Set up your domain for Blogger

cc_logoNow you can have an experience of having a custom domain name associated with your blogger account, just for free. You will be getting DNS management tools to manage your domain settings and have an experience of it before buying a .com domain.  There are two ways to associate your account with blogger blog, one is by URL forwarding, (a beginner lever approach) and other is advanced level approach (used to map BlogSpot domain to your custom domain).

To do this sign up at, and get a free domain

  • Easy Method
    Login to your account, click manage domain on left side, and chose third option of URL forwarding and enter the URL where you want your domain to be redirected.
  • Effortful method
    This method is little effortful than above one, but it will give better results, as this will make sure that search results you get, will be in form of domain you have mapped. Just add following zone records to your account instead of URL forwarding( Just assume your domain name instead of
    zone records
    Now go to blogger dashboard, select your blog, go to Settings => Publishing => Switch to custom domain => Switch to advance settings , and there put in the name of your custom domain. That’s it!!, your domain setup will take 1-2 days, after which whenever you’ll visit your domain , it will land you to your blog.

<link href=’‘ rel=’alternate’ title=’Blogging Tricks‘ type=’application/atom+xml‘/>

By saving the above template I got something like shown below –

You can also add label specific feed, which you can show to your homepage.

To write feed type as an Atom Feed we use “application/atom+xml” , and if the feed is RSS we use “application/rss+xml, insted.
